I spoke to a rat from Lagos Nigeria
Date
8th May 2019
There are things that i want to tell you…
Weird, strange, and bizarre things
Pernicious perhaps, but you’ll have to hear me out
“What is it?”
So…
I spoke to a rat from Lagos, Nigeria
and I need you to believe I was not …
“Delirious?”
Listen! the things he said were serious
Atrocious, damning, and a little audacious
he knew a great many things and had ears to the wall
wily thing, sly creature, he was ready to tell all
he boasted and bragged his many accomplishments;
he claimed to have conquered presidents’ offices,
to have witnessed the gatherings of lawless men….
“You believe this?”
I confess, I may be a little dubious as you
his tales are convincing in a way that speaks true
he admits to dining with the chiefs and elites,
he feasts with them as they steal from the poor.
Then HE stole from the poor, like the lawless men did
with his lewd sense of humour, he squeaked this with delight
“Interesting….”
He told me of the times when he lived in police stations
He recounted the times he lived in holy buildings
Places which entertain sinners and criminals alike
He swore that due to his poor sight
He could no more distinguish
the officers from the criminals,
Or the holy men from the sinners
For they all looked the same.
He gloated about eating the papers of men;
the ones which the officer’s pocket for bribes;
the ones which the lowly men con for greed.
“And this rat….
where is he now?”
He prowls the streets of Lekki and Ajegunle
Indiscriminate in his never-ending lootings
He steals from the rich and he steals from the poor
He steals from the Starving, he wants more and more
for what care he of the people’s hysteria
he is merely a rat from Lagos, Nigeria.
